Lena Hart worked briefly as a weaver at TKWM in 1928-29.
Lena Luella Banker was born on 19 Sep 1885, in Cadillac, Michigan, to James and Antoinette [Sweet] Banker. After her father abandoned the family upon moving to Oregon, her mother filed for divorce and gained custody of Lena in 1899. By 1900, Lena was living with her sister May’s family in Horeb, Oregon, at the age of 14.
On 4 May 1902, Lena married Ernest Kapphahn in Salem, Oregon. Both were under the statutory marriage age, requiring parental consent – Lena was 17, and Ernest was 19. The couple had two children, including their son Chester, who tragically died at the age of three. Their daughter, Dorothy, was born 3 Dec 1904, in Salem. Ernest worked as the manager of the Willamette Baggage & Transfer Co.
However, their marriage was short-lived. They divorced in the summer of 1906 amid accusations of adultery. The contentious custody battle over their daughter Dorothy saw Ernest hiring detectives to observe Lena and the child in Portland. Chester, their son, passed away in November 1906. Dorothy later lived with her grandmother Banker, as recorded in the 1910 census.
On 26 Sep 1908, Lena married Walter Hart. The couple had two daughters, Virginia and Doris. By 1910, they resided on Stanton St. In Portland, Oregon, where Walter worked as a railroad laborer. Their daughter Virginia was born on 14 Feb 1918, in Portland. The family lived on 70th St. with Walter employed as a machinist in a shipyard. Walter passed away on 12 Mar 1927, in Salem, from pneumonia, leaving Lena to support the family. She found work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a weaver, to provide for her daughters.
Lena married Shuman Campbell on 14 Feb 1928, in Salem. They lived together at 1341 Waller St. along with Lena’s daughters from her previous marriage. Lena worked as a janitor during this time. Tragedy struck again when Shuman died of pulmonary abscesses on 12 May 1933.
On 6 Nov 1936, Lena married Roy V. Hutchings in Stevenson, Washington. This was her fourth marriage, and she was 51 years old. Lena passed away on 9 Apr 1939, in Salem, Oregon, at the age of 53. Lena’s death was both sudden and somber, as her body was discovered at her home on Waller St. The coroner ruled the death a suicide by chloroform based on evidence at the scene and testimony of witnesses of two prior attempts. She was buried alongside her second husband, Walter Hart, in Salem Pioneer Cemetery. |
