Life Story
|
Lewis W. Pickard worked as foreman of the dye house at TKWM from 1895 until 1918.
Lewis W. Pickard was born in 1860 in Jamestown, New York to John and Nancy [Farnham] Pickard. He attended school in Jamestown and worked in the woolen mills before moving to Oregon in the 1890s.
On 4 Nov 1895, he married fellow mill employee Ida Campbell in Salem, Oregon. Shortly after, on 22 November, the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, where he had recently taken the position of head dyer, burned down, destroying all his valuable dye books. Previously, he had worked at Waterloo Mill.
In the 1900 census, Lewis was recorded living in Salem, Oregon, along with his wife Ida. They rented rooms with the McGuire family. He was 40 years old. In 1906, he sued Ida for divorce, alleging desertion. He worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill until retirement in 1918.
Lewis W. Pickard died 22 Oct 1918, at the age of 58, from heart disease. He was visiting Long Beach, California, and former woolen mill friends at the time. At his sister’s request, his body was sent back east to Jamestown, New York and buried with family members in the Lake View Cemetery. |
