Life Story

Louis Koppe worked as a weaver at TKWM in 1905 and again in 1909. Additional Koppe family members also worked for the mill.

Louis Koppe was born on February 16, 1886, in Brownsville, Oregon, to Emil and Augusta (Harzer) Koppe. In 1895, at the age of nine, Louis lived with his family in Salem, Oregon, where he attended school. By 1900, the family had moved to Prospect, Marion County, Oregon.

In 1906, the Koppe family relocated to Eugene, Oregon, where they purchased the Eugene Woolen Mills, situated along the millrace near the Ferry Street Bridge. On March 9, 1908, Louis enlisted in the Oregon National Guard for a three-year term, serving in Company A of the 4th Regiment Infantry.

By 1910, at 23 years old, Louis worked as a weaver in the Eugene Woolen Mill and resided in Eugene. In the fall of 1914, he suffered a broken leg and subsequent infection, resulting in a ten-week hospitalization.

Louis married Blanche Zell on December 31, 1915, in Eugene. Both were 27 years old at the time, with Louis continuing his work at the woolen mill and Blanche working as a housekeeper. In 1918, Louis’s WW1 draft registration card noted his position as foreman at the woolen mill, describing him as tall, slender, with brown eyes and dark brown hair. The couple resided at 311 East 3rd Street in Eugene. Tragically, in November 1918, their infant son passed away shortly after birth.

By 1920, Louis worked as the boss weaver at the Eugene Woolen Mill, and the couple lived on 5th Street in Eugene. A decade later, in 1930, Louis had risen to head of the woolen mill, still residing on 5th Street with Blanche. By 1940, Louis was listed as a former weaver who owned the woolen mill, continuing to live on 5th Street with his wife.

During the 1940s, Louis served as a Eugene city councilman for eight years. In March 1948, his wife Blanche passed away. Louis remarried in January 1949 to Mrs. Esther Arnold Gross of Long Beach, California, a former Eugene resident. By 1950, Louis, aged 64, had moved to a farm on 1685 River Road in Lane County, living with his second wife Esther and his nephew Preston Gross.

In 1950, the Eugene Woolen Mill operation was liquidated, with Louis serving as vice president of the firm prior to its closure. Louis Koppe passed away suddenly at his home on River Road, presumably from a heart attack, at the age of 77. He was laid to rest in Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene, Oregon.
