Life Story

Mabel Campbell worked in the weaving room at TKWM in 1893.

Mabel Campbell was born 28 Jan 1874 in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada to parents Richard and Martha Ann [Barber] Campbell. She was one of eight children. In 1889, when Mabel was 15 years old, the Campbell family emigrated from Canada to the United States, eventually settling in Salem, Oregon, by 1891.

In 1893, Mabel began working in the weaving room of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. It was here that she met her future husband, Ed Sawyer, who also worked at the mill. Several of Mabel’s siblings also worked at the mill: Ida, John, Harvey and Richard.

On 1 June 1898, Mabel married James Edward (Ed) Sawyer in a charming home wedding at her parent’s residence on Lee St. in Yew Park, Salem. The wedding was officiated by Rev. Walter Reynolds of the United Brethren Church. The house was beautifully decorated with ferns, Oregon grape and roses for the occasion. The bride wore a gown of organdie over cream silk and carried a lovely cluster of bride’s roses. Following the ceremony, the newlyweds honeymooned in Linn County for a few weeks before returning to Salem.

The couple resided in Salem for six years, during which Ed continued his employment at the woolen mill. In 1904, they moved to Brownsville, OR where Ed would spend the rest of his career working at Brownsville Woolen Mills. Mabel and Ed Sawyer had two children, Harry and Edwin, born in 1909-1910.

In 1948, the Sawyers moved to Camas, Washington. Ed retired at the age of 79, and Mabel was 74. Their son Harry lived with them. On 26 Dec 1950, Ed passed away at home in Camas due to t heart attack. He was buried in Washougal Cemetery.

Mabel lived for a few more years and passed died on 8 Feb 1955 in Vancouver Memorial Hospital. Cause of death was a heart attack. She was also buried in Washougal Cemetery.
