Story  John “Mac” Carthew worked at TKWM from about 1928 to 1960 as a carder, spinner, then foreman.

John M. Carthew was born in Wisconsin in 1902 to Raymond J and Fannie McKenzie Carthew. Ray and Fannie separated when Mac was about 5. Ray went to live with his parents and stayed in Wisconsin for the remainder of his life.

After John’s parents separated, he, his mother Fannie and his sister Kathryn lived with Fannie’s elderly Aunt Irene in Wisconsin. Then, between 1910 and 1920, Fannie, John and Kathryn left Wisconsin to live with Fannie’s mother Susanna McKenzie in Salem.

By 1920, Fannie claimed to be divorced and John started using the name Mac J. Carthew. In May of that year, Mac enlisted in the Navy at age 18. He apparently served on the east coast as he was a patient on the hospital ship USS Mercy for a short time. The Mercy was based out of Yorktown, VA and served the eastern seaboard at that time. Mac was released from the service 21 May 1923 and he returned to Salem.

In 1925, Mac and several other men, were convicted of a crime in Marion County but the judge immediately paroled Mac from a six-month sentence after he pleaded guilty. The police testified that Mac “was least to be blamed of the men involved in the case.”

By 1928, Mac was working at TKWM and on a straighter path when he married Velma (maiden name unknown). He was 25 and she was 17. Velma was an office worker for several years while Mac continued to work at TKWM until 1960 when he was a foreman. In 1961, he moved to a foreman’s position at the Paris Woolen Mill in Stayton and worked there for many more years. Mac and Velma apparently had no children.

Mac passed away on 14 Jan 1984. Velma passed in 1998 at age 87. She and Mac are buried in Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.
