Martha Sheridan worked for TKWM from 1905 – 1909 as a weaver and finisher. Brother William and sister Mary also worked for TKWM.
Martha was born 22 Feb 1885 in Salem, OR to Philip James and Mary [Casey] Sheridan. She was one of eight children. After attending public schools in Salem, she took work alongside family members at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, as a weaver and later finisher. She left mill work in 1909 to train as a nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, OR. She graduated at the top of her class and served as valedictorian during the graduation ceremony in June 1911. After graduation, she took work as a private nurse.
Martha joined the Army Nurse Corp during WWI and was stationed at Camp Lewis, WA from 5 Oct 1918 – 11 Apr 1919. At the end of the war, she returned to Portland and took a job as a school nurse in the Portland Public Schools. On 2 Aug 1928 she married Frank L. Benedict in Portland, OR. He was 54 years old at the time to her 45 and had been married to her sister Cecelia. No children were born to the couple. Frank died in 1941. In 1962 Martha returned to Salem, OR to live after retirement. She died 17 Nov 1967 and was buried next to Frank and sister Cecelia in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Portland, OR. |
