Life Story

Mary Albrich Foltz worked at TKWM in 1936 and again in 1950 as a bast winder.

Mary Amelia Albrich was born 6 Dec 1911 in Salem, OR to Frank Xavier and Bertha [Huffman] Albrich. She was one of eight children in a devout Catholic family. Her father worked as a plumber for his brother-in-law, Theo M. Barr, who owned a plumbing and heating shop in Salem.

Mary attended Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic private school, and graduated in May 1931, shortly after her mother’s death in April of the same year. On 5 Aug 1931, she married Maxey M. Langford, a recent graduate of Salem High School. The couple had one daughter but divorced in 1934 due to desertion by Mary.

In 1936, Mary began work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a bast winder, operating the machinery that prepared bobbins for weaving. On 9 May 1936 she married Louis Foltz, the son of her father’s new wife, Margaret, which made Margaret both her stepmother and mother-in-law. Mary and Louis had two sons, David and Stephen.

By 1940, Mary was a homemaker, and the family lived at 1470 Chemeketa St. while her husband Louis continued working at the woolen mill. By 1950, Mary had returned to work at the mill, balancing her job with raising their three children. The family had moved to 940 S. 20th St.

In 1951, after 15 years of marriage, Mary and Louis divorced. Louis had deserted the family and was involved with a coworker, Sylvia Petrasy. Mary was granted custody of their children. She then took a job as a psychiatric aide at the Oregon State Hospital, where she met Elwood Oscar Nelson. They married on 28 Sep 1953 in Vancouver, WA.

Mary and Elwood divorced in 1967. Mary retired in 1977 and lived at 2131 Center St. NE in Salem. She passed away on 4 July 1990 at the age of 78 and was buried in Belcrest Memorial Park. Her obituary highlighted her work at TKWM and the Oregon State Hospital, her membership in the Catholic Church and the Eagles Lodge, as well as her love for bowling and reading.
