Life Story

Minnie Wickizer worked at TKWM from 1921-1938 first as a shoddy sorter (picker) in the picker house, then later the dye room. Her mother Dolly Kelly and son Kelly Wickizer also worked at the mill

Minnie May Kelly was born 7 Apr 1874 in Cottage Grove, OR to J. Elias and Dolly Kelly. She was one of four children born to the couple, three of whom lived to adulthood. Father Elias was a farmer by occupation who dabbled in mining in Eastern Oregon shortly after the family first emigrated from Missouri. By 1880 he had moved the family to Wasco County, OR.

Minnie married Samuel Wickizer on 2 June 1903 in La Grande, OR. An account of their wedding follows:

Last evening at 6:30 Mr. Samuel Wickizer and Miss Minnie M. Kelley were quietly married at the home of the bride’s parents in this city, Rev. O.H. King officiating. Only the intimate friends of the young people were present. The wedding supper was served at Mrs. Stultz.’ Mr. Wickizer and his bride have been residents of La Grande since last January but in that time they have each made many friends. They are both members of the Christian Church and the church people, especially, are sorry to lose them. They left last evening for Baker City and from there they will go to the Greenhorn Mining District, where the bride’s father and groom are interested in mining.

The couple moved to Salem by 1904, where their first child was born. Then they moved to Moore’s Valley near Yamhill, Oregon. The couple had four children: Emil, Wanda, Dolly, and Kelly.

They moved back to Salem by the 1920 census and rented a home at 1429 Lee St. For themselves and Minnie’s mother Dolly. Their children ranged in age from 5 to 15. Samuel found work as a day laborer and Minnie stayed home to care for the children until the youngest went to school. Her mother Dolly found work as a shoddy sorter at the nearby Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Minnie joined her there in 1921. Shoddy referred to recycled wool made from old woolen clothes. The clothes were brought to the rag house, put through a grinder, washed and re-spun to make the shoddy material. Minnie worked there until 1938.

Minnie’s husband Samuel died 17 Dec 1942 at the family residence 1095 S. 18th St. Minnie followed six years later in Silverton Hospital following chronic myocarditis. She was buried in City View Cemetery with her husband.
