Life Story

Dick Campbell worked briefly in the dye house from August to November 1903, and again for a few days in October 1904. His supervisor was his brother-in-law Lewis W. Pickard. His brother Harvey Campbell also worked in the dye house.
Richard Campbell Jr. was born 20 Jan 1883 in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, to Richard and Martha [Barber] Campbell; one of eight children. The family immigrated to the United States in 1889 and by 1891, lived in Salem, Oregon. According to the Marion County census record, Richard Jr., at age 11, lived in his father’s household as a school student.
By 1905, the Campbell family had moved to Portland, where Richard Sr. was a contractor/builder. Richard Jr., at 22 years old, worked as a cigar maker for Gardner Bros. He held this job until 1910 according to city directories. In 1910, Richard lived on Monroe St. in Portland with his parents, along with his brother John’s family, sister Sarah and her son Lewis, and brothers George and Harvey.
After this 1910 census record, the research trail goes cold. Typical records for the time period, such as WWI draft registration, census data, city directories, and newspapers, have been searched. Notably absent was any mention of Richard in his mother Martha’s 1918 death record or subsequent obituaries for his father and siblings. The general conclusion at the time of this research was that Richard had died before his mother in 1918. |
