This school souvenir for the old Rickey School was cute to look at, but became much more interesting after reading the note at the very end regarding G.W. Jones, the County Superintendent. 1899 marks the start of the Philippine-American War (1899-1902). Many Oregon soldiers were sent to fight, and it appears Mr. Jones was one of them. Good to know Mrs. Jones could help out in his stead.
Rickey was a small community in Marion County, Southeast of Salem, “one mile south of the Penitentiary Road” according to Lewis McArthur’s Geographic Place Names of Oregon.
