Rolla “Rollie” Howe worked for the TKWM as a spinner in 1909 at the age of 28. City directories list him as a bartender as well. His brother, Claire Joel Howe worked in the TKWM beginning in 1890 and is likely the reason Rolla was able to pick up work there briefly.
Rolla Howe was born 14 Jan 1881 in Buchanan, Berrien County, Michigan to parents Frank M. and Martha Jane “Jennie” (McIntyre) Howe. He was one of four children, two boys and two girls. The family moved from Michigan to Kansas where the youngest daughter was born in 1883. The family then moved on to Salem, Oregon by 1890. Rolla’s parents were farmers and resided on Garden Rd nr RR. Both parents are buried in City View Cemetery.
Rolla is found through a number of newspaper articles as a troubled teen. He had a number of arrests over the years involving alcohol, bootlegging and drunk driving. His occupation as a bartender probably did not help this situation. This issue continued into adulthood.
By 1917 Rolla Howe was in San Francisco, CA. His WWI Draft Registration lists him as an unemployed clerk. By 1919 he was working on ships and in 1921 a US Application for Seaman’s Protection certificate was issued to him. In late 1922 Rolla arrived by ship on the West Kader to Portland, OR where he would spend the remainder of his life.
Rolla Howe married Caroline “Carrie” Behrens on 9 Jan 1924 in Portland, OR at the age of 42. This was his first and only marriage; Caroline’s 2nd marriage. No children were born to this union. Rolla is listed as a waiter and a laborer during this time. He is still making the newspapers because of his drinking and driving.
Rolla Howe passed away in Portland, OR on 11 Mar 1945 from cardiac failure at the age of 64. He is buried at the Historic Columbian Cemetery in Portland, OR. His wife Carrie passed away in 1970, she is buried by her mother at the Rose City Cemetery in Portland, OR. |
