Life Story

Roy Benson worked as a spinner at TKWM from 1906-1909. His brother Ray and sister Mary also worked at the mill.

Roy Edward Benson was born on 17 May 1887 in Salem, Oregon, to Lyman and Rosa [Powell] Benson. One of eight children, he grew up in the Englewood district of Salem and attended public school through the eighth grade.

From 1906-1909 he took a job at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in the spinning department. By 1910, Roy worked at a sash and door factory in Salem while living at the family home on North Winter St. From 1913-1920, he served as a mechanic in the U.S. Army, including overseas service from August 1918 to February 1919. After his discharge he returned to his father’s household in Portland and worked as a fireman for the railroad.

On 23 June 1923, Roy married Mary Morin in Vancouver, WA. He was 34 years old and his bride 28 at the time of their marriage. By 1924 they lived in Washougal, Washington and eventually had five children: George, Pauline, Donald, Victor, and Marlene.

In 1930, the family lived in a rented home in Toledo, Oregon, where Roy worked as a planer feeder in a sawmill. By 1940, they owned a home, and Roy continued his work at the sawmill.

By 1950, the family had moved to Civil Bend in Douglas County, OR. Roy, now 62 years old, worked as a planer man for a lumber mill.

Roy passed away on 9 May 1970, at the age of 82 in the Veteran’s Administration Hospital Roseburg, Oregon, from hypostatic bronchopneumonia. He was buried in the National [Veteran’s] Cemetery in Roseburg.
