Life Story
|
Samuel Rich worked as a weaver at TKWM from 1898-1950. His sons Lawrence and Robert also worked for the mill.
Samuel Rich was born 30 June 1879 in Bellicourt, France to Abraham and Sophie [Dormois] Rich. He was one of six children born to the couple. The family immigrated to the United States in 1889 to join friends and family in Salem. They purchased land in the Englewood addition and joined the German Baptist Society church. Samuel attended North School through the 8th grade.
At the age of 19 Samuel started work in the weaving department of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. He married Augusta Fleischmann on 10 November 1904 in the German Baptist Church in Salem. The newspaper reported that the wedding took place at 8 o’clock in the evening and was performed by the Rev. F. Hermann.
The church was artistically decorated with green foliage, autumn leaves and cut flowers. The bride looked very sweet in a white organdy gown, and was attended by her sister Miss Helen Fleischman, who wore blue. The groom was attended by his brother, Mr. Silas Rich. Mrs. Lydia Rich presided at the organ. Refreshments were served in the Sunday school room of the church, after which the happy young couple went immediately to their pleasant new home near D Street. They have the best wishes of a large circle of friends.
Samuel and Augusta were the parents of five children: Mildred, Lawrence, Robert, Louise, Mary.
Samuel’s WWI draft registration card records his physical characteristics as medium build, medium height, dark brown hair, and gray eyes. He was not called up for military service. In 1921, the family began holding church services in their home. The group were charter members of the Salem Christian and Missionary Alliance church. In 1924, daughter Mildred, age 17, died of diphtheria. It was a hard blow for the family. After her death, Samuel quit millwork for a brief time and tried to make a living at his hobby of oil painting, mainly biblical scenes. He always returned though, to the steady paycheck and encouraged his boys to do the same.
Samuel retired in 1950. He died the following year from heart failure and was buried in Belcrest Memorial Cemetery. Wife Augusta lived to the age of 90. She passed away on 15 Nov 1976 while visiting a daughter in Oakland, California. She was buried next to Samuel in Belcrest. |
