Background
Sarah Ann Wade Cone was born near Cleveland, Ohio on April 3, 1837. She moved to Goshen, Indiana at the age of six. On February 7, 1853 she married William P. Long in Middleburg, Indiana prior to their emigration to Oregon. They arrived in Oregon City in October 1853 and their son William was born in December. Sarah’s husband William died in 1855 after which Sarah lived with and worked for Mrs. Abigail Scott Duniway. Then she moved to Barlow Station and took work as a cook. She married Oliver Cone on July 3, 1855 and became the stepmother to his four children. They took up their donation land claim near Butteville, OR. Five children were born to the couple, four of whom survived to adulthood: Eliza Jane, Orville, Everett, and Mary. After the death of her second husband Oliver in the Idaho mines, Sarah married his brother Anson Sterling Cone on October 20, 1866 in Butteville. Sarah lived until the age of 91. Prior to her death she was crowned “queen” of the Oregon Pioneer Association at their spring 1927 picnic at Champoeg. She died 2 April 1929 at the home of her daughter in Portland, OR. She was buried in the Butteville Cemetery.
Eliza Jane Cone was the daughter of Sarah Ann [Wade] and Oliver Cone. She was born April 5, 1854 in Butteville, OR. She attended the first Butteville School with her brothers, and was married to Joseph Clark Graham on July 7, 1876. They were the parents of six children: Sidney, Collins, Cora, Ida, Joseph Jr., and Ellen. The couple owned a large hop yard in Butteville. After her husband’s death in 1920, Eliza remained in their Butteville home. She died June 17, 1954 and was buried in Butteville Cemetery with her mother.
