Verna Lorain Shank was born 12 Feb 1899 in Mount Pleasant, OR to Henry and Roxy [Ray] Shank. She was one of seven children in the household. 

In 1915, when Verna was just 15 years old, her father died. Her mother, along with the children, continued to farm the family property outside Jordan in Linn County, Oregon. After completing high school, Verna enrolled in Capital Business College in 1921. 

In 1924, Verna began working for the Santiam Woolen Mills. A year later, she joined the weaving department at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, where she remained until 1957. During this time, she lived with Nelson and Mae Vanderhoff at 1216 State St. 

According to the 1940 census, Verna lived on Oak St. and continued her work at the woolen mill. She lived alone, with no additional household members. By the 1950 census, she still worked as a weaver, though no specific address was listed.  

On 17 May 1950, Verna married Leslie Glenn Dalziell in Salem, OR. Both were 51 years old at the time. It was Verna’s first marriage and Leslie’s second.  Leslie worked for a dairy, and Verna continued her work as a weaver. The couple lived at 1625 Waller St. in Salem. They had no children. 

Leslie passed away 26 Apr 1978, at the age of 81. Verna died 9 Oct 1981 at Salem Convalescent Center, at the age of 82. Both were buried in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR.
