Lettie Bigler worked for TKWM as a weaver from 1913 to early 1914. Her sister Bessie also worked for TKWM.
Violetta “Lettie” Bigler 30 Oct 1896 in MI to Fredrick Albert Bigler and Matilda C Buck Bigler. She was the youngest of five children and her sister Bessie was three years older. Fredrick was a farmer.
Fredrick brought the family from Littlefield, MI to Salem, Oregon in 1910 and there he became a laborer. In 1913, Lettie found work as a weaver at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill where sister Bessie worked. They both lived with their parents at 2515 Current St. (now called Rose St). Both sisters left work to marry.
On 18 May 1914, Lettie married Edward C. Moyer, an attendant at the Oregon State Asylum. By early 1920, the couple had moved to Portland where Edward worked as an order clerk for a wholesale crockery business. They had two children, Helen age 5 and Evelyn, age 1. Edward’s mother Emily Wallace also lived with the family.
Lettie’s family history soon took a tragic turn with the death of husband Edward on 6 Oct 1920 at the State Tuberculosis Hospital. Lettie remarried on 21 Jan 1922, to a Norwegian immigrant named Andrew Holte. A year later, Lettie died from pulmonary tuberculosis on 6 Apr 1923 in her home in Portland. She was buried in City View Cemetery in Salem. Daughter Evelyn died of diphtheria on 25 Oct 1924. Daughter Helen went to live with her aunt Bessie. She was 8 years old. |
