Getting Started with Genealogy

When:   Saturday, March 12, 2011 10:45 am to 2:00 pm – Bring a brown bag lunch
Where:  Meet at the Center and walk to the Oregon State Library, 250 Winter Street SE, Salem
Cost:  $10 for members, $13 for non-members

Have you been wondering what resources are available to get started on researching your family’s past? Join Willamette Heritage Center and Oregon State Library staff and volunteers to begin finding answers. At 11:00 a combination of topics including “Accessing the OSL Catalog System” and an introduction to the newest version of Ancestry.com. 12:00-1:00 pm will be brown bag lunch time for all attendees. At 1:00 pm return to the Library Reference Room where you will join Joan Kaiser’s Beginner’s Genealogy Class, talking about the basic strategies on how to do genealogy research. Kaiser will also conduct a short tour of the Library Reference Room to discuss the numerous resources available to the public. Limited to 20 people. Pre-registration by Wednesday, March 9 is required.

Dating Your Old Photographs with Max Marbles
When:   Saturday, April 16, 2011 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Where:  The Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill, 1313 Mill Street SE, Salem
Cost:  $10 for members, $13 for non-members

Many of us have photographs that are undated but it is often possible to establish the date by carefully comparing with other pictures of known dates. In this workshop, you’ll learn how a photograph can be dated with a considerable degree of precision. Learn techniques for dating old photographs, and bring some of yours in for dating.  Limited to 20 people. Pre-registration by Wednesday, April 13 is required.
