Story | W F Brown worked for TKWM from its opening in 1890 through 1895 possibly as a carder then as a night watchman and laborer.
William Franklin Brown was born in Feb 1856 in Crawford County, Arkansas to Thomas and Sophia Brown. By 1870, William and his family were living in North Salem, OR. His father Thomas was a wool sorter. In 1878, William married Ellen Layson. In the 1880 census, William, age 25, and his brother James are shown living with another family and farming in Heppner, OR. Ellen remained with her in-laws in Salem. By 1889, William was back in Salem working as a guard in the State Penitentiary, but that did not last long. He started working for the newly opened TKWM, first as a carder then as a watchman for several years. By 1900, William had returned to farming in Marion County. For a short time, William worked as an engineer in a saw mill but by 1920, William, wife Ellen and 39-year-old son James had moved to a farm in Lincoln County, WA. William farmed around Indian Creek, WA until his death in 1933, about two years after his wife Ellen died. Both are buried at Swede Flats Lutheran Cemetery in Fort Spokane, WA. |
