Life Story

William Kantelberg worked briefly at TKWM in 1914 as a laborer on a construction project and ditch repair. Father Gustav and brothers Conrad and Erich also worked at the mill.

William Kantelberg was born 16 Dec 1894 in Salem, OR to Gustav and Augusta [Walters] Kantelberg. He was the middle of six children born to the couple with the youngest being a set of twins. The family lived on D Street in the Englewood neighborhood and attended the German Baptist Church. William and his siblings attended neighborhood schools. In 1910, the family moved to 1375 N 12th St.

In 1913, William’s twin brothers, age ten, were accidentally shot while playing with a gun. Though both boys received minor injuries, Walter developed blood poisoning and died. His twin Ben, recovered. The following year, father Gustav died from cancer on 1 April 1914, at the age of 53. William was 20 years old at the time and still lived with his parents. The 1915 Salem city directory records his occupation as teamster.

At the advent of WWI, both William and his brother Erich found work in Portland in the shipyards. From William’s draft registration card we learn that he was tall, with a slender build and had blue eyes and light brown hair. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry from 3 Oct 1918 until an honorable discharge on 7 Dec 1918 in Ft. McDowell, California. After his return, he went back to Salem and started a truck transport business. On 9 Feb 1918 he married Althea Marie Holdredge. The couple would later divorce on 7 Apr 1936.

In November 1924, William legally changed his last name to Berg. From that point on he went by William Berg. By 1930, William had started a landscaping business and nursery. He operated this with wives Althea and later Ida, through the early 1950s. Their business was located on Nebraska St. at the railroad crossing, with the entrance being on Garnet. They specialized in the movement and transplant of oversize plants such as the 600-pound rhododendron reported by the local newspaper in April 1949.

On 15 Oct 1948 William married Ida D. Butler in Salem. They were both in their early 50s and listed as widowers on the marriage return, though technically William was a divorcee. This marriage would also end in divorce, on 10 Oct 1952. After the divorce, William moved to Bremerton, WA for work at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a gas cutter and burner. Then he retired in 1957, and in June of that year, he entered the Veterans Home.

William married a third and final time on Oct 1963 in Retsil, WA to Ivory May Artripp. He was 68 and his bride was 65 years of age. William died on 17 July 1966 at the age of 71 in the Seattle Veterans Hospital. He was buried in the Washington Veterans Home Cemetery at Retsil, WA.
