William Newman (Neuwan) was born in Prussia, Germany in December 1865 and immigrated to the United States in 1891. In 1892, William married Amelia Newman. In 1896, the couple lived on 23rd Street in Salem, OR while William worked as a weaver, at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. The 1900 census indicates that William and Amelia had moved to the Prospect area, south of Salem. William still worked at TKWM. At this point we lose track of William Newman. 1920 and 1930 census records list a William S Newman with wife Amelia living in the Salem area, however details do not match with enough accuracy to the known information.
