Story |
William Sheridan worked for TKWM from 1905 – 1930 as a wool sorter and grader. Sisters Mary and Martha, and future wife Anna also worked for TKWM.  Â
William Phil Sheridan was born 13 Sep 1879 in Salem, OR to Philip James and Mary [Casey] Sheridan. He was one of 8 children. He attended East Salem School. He went to work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in around 1899 in the finishing department. He married Anna M. Wolff 11 Feb 1902 in Salem, OR. They were the parents of seven children. Â
They lived at 448 S 16th St. until 1910 when they rented a farm in Turner, OR. Around 1920 when they moved to the Rickey District, east of Salem and took ownership of the White Fir Dairy. They were active members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salem. Tragedy struck the family in 1928 when son James, home on leave from the Navy, was killed when his car was forced from the highway by wood truck. He was thrown from the car and did not survive his injuries. Then in 1944, within 6 months of each other, sons William and Kenneth, died. Both had enlisted in the Navy. William died in April when his ship, the US John Staub sank, and Ken died of tropical fever while stationed at Camp Parks, CA. The Sheridan’s remaining son Laurence also served in wartime, was twice wounded, but made it home to the family.Â
The Sheridan family sold the dairy and established a new one, Hazel Dell, in 1930 and operated it until forced to retire by William’s poor health in 1941. On 17 Aug 1951 William suffered a stroke while driving home from Salem. He was taken to the hospital where he died the same day. Mary died 18 May 1952. Both were buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Salem.  |
