Winema School

Winema School, formally know as Chemeketa Alternative High program, at Chemeketa Community College started in the early 1980’s with a request from the local high schools to establish a structured option for at-risk youth other than GED. Because of negative connotations affiliated with Alternative Schools and their student population, the name was changed to Winema School in 1999 to reflect the positive option it is. The name Winema was chosen because of its location at Winema Place on the college campus.

Initially the program served only contracted students referred from local high schools. Because of the 90% success rate the program has, many self-pay students have chosen to finish their diploma requirements through Winema School.

The most common reason for enrollment in the program is a smaller learning environment and stricter attendance policy. Students served are from Salem and outlying mid-valley communities.
