Zula Zong Hunt worked as a weaver at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in 1900 and again briefly, in 1904 alongside her sister Mattie.
Zula was born on 12 Sep 1875 in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois to William Hutchinson Hunt and Julia Anna Dixon Hunt, the second of six children. While they lived in Illinois the couple started their family. Four of their children were born in Wenona; Martha Margaret “Mattie,” Zula Zong, Maude Eva, and Guy William Hunt.
In 1885 Zula’s parents moved their family to Republican City, Harlan, Nebraska. William continued his trade as a butcher in Nebraska. During this time two more children were born into the family, Warren John and Maurice Leigh Hunt. In 1890 the family made the move to Oregon.
The family settled in Salem, Marion, Oregon. They were very active citizens, and the children were all popular and talented in one way or another. Zula’s father William and her brother Guy were in the butcher business. Her brother Warren was a very popular, accomplished musician, a trap drummer who played in many orchestras.
Zula was 5’6”, 110 lbs. with a dark complexion. She had a very active social life as a young lady in Salem, OR. She is mentioned in many newspaper articles attending parties and traveling on vacations. She also was a bit of an artist and won an award at the State Fair in 1903 for her oil landscape painting.
Zula lived with her parents until she met and married a young man named Lewis Charles Dooley. Lew was a railroad employee. The newly married couple remained in Salem until sometime after 1920. The 1930 census shows them living in Beaverton. Lew passed away in Beaverton on 19 Feb 1932 at the age of 56. He is buried in City View Cemetery, Salem, OR alongside Zula.
Zula remained widowed until age 64 when she married another railroad man, David Buckley on 2 Dec 1939 in Portland, OR. This was David’s first marriage; he was 58 years old. David and Zula lived at 37 SE 56th Ave, Portland, Multnomah, OR at the time of their marriage.
By 1941 the couple had moved to Los Angeles according to an obituary for Zula’s brother Guy. David and Zula remained in the Los Angeles area for a number of years. David had served in WWI and spent some time in a veteran’s hospital in California before marrying Zula.
Zula’s voter registration in 1946 has her living at 8300 Hickory St, Los Angeles, CA. David passed away on 30 Jan 1945 and is buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery. Zula remained in California for a number of years after David’s passing before returning to Oregon.
According to Zula’s death certificate she returned to Portland, OR in 1958 and remained there until her death on 21 Oct 1965. She lived at 1936 SE Lexington St and died from a cerebral vascular accident. At the time of her death, she was survived by 3 cousins and several nieces. She is buried next to her first husband Lew Dooley in City View Cemetery, Salem, OR. Her parents and siblings are buried nearby. |
